Third grade is a big year in education. This year the third grade team's goal is to help students transition into departmentalization, as well as becoming self-sufficient and lifelong learners. I will be teaching the third grade Math, Social Studies, and for homeroom 13 also Religion, Reading, and Cursive.
MATH: The math program we are using is called My Math which also has an online component. This year's Math focuses on building upon those early skills learned in second grade. We start out with place value as dictated by the Common Core Standards. We then move into addition and subtraction of two and three digit numbers. IT IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT THE STUDENTS KNOW THEIR MATH FACTS! Daily review of these facts is essential to the successful transition to multiplication and division. We will be using many modes of learning such as fact games, minute facts, and other interactive manipulatives as well as home practice. Eventually, the program moves through working and reworking word problems in different ways. There will be daily math homework that will be posted on the homework page.
SOCIAL STUDIES: This year, Social Studies focuses on communities, like ours, and communities found around the world. In Social Studies will include the textbook work as well as creative projects within the classroom. We will then move into learning about the election process and participate in a mock election! We then move to geography and learning the different names of landforms and masses, cardinal directions, reading a map, using the compass rose, etc. This leads us into environment, learning how the environment and communities have changed over time. In this class we will be using the SmartBoard to complete activities, watch interactive videos, and team building activities to build our own classroom community.
READING: The reading program we are using this year is the Treasures program which is also available online. It aligns with the Common Core Standards and each unit contains different genres. It focuses on vocabulary development, comprehension skills, and higher level thinking skills. We have two readers, a practice book, and supplementary materials.
RELIGION: We study the Church and its beginnings from the birth of Jesus to his Ascension into heaven, how the early church developed, our Catholic church today, and how we can be an active member of our parish community. We will also review the seven sacraments and the parts of the Mass. In each lesson, we discuss how we can be a better follower of Jesus and how we are an integral part of the Kingdom of God. We learn the four marks of the Church: one, holy,Catholic, and Apostolic. We explore the meaning of what it means to be a member of the Catholic Church.
CURSIVE: The third graders will learn how to write in cursive all of the lower and upper case letters. We have a cursive book to write in and gradually begin writing in cursive as the letters are mastered.
